HOW DOES IT WORK?
The herbs in Hot Plants for Him have been used for generations by many traditional cultures and are now being validated by Western science and research.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) has been used in the high Andes in Peru for about five thousand years.2 It is a plant of the Brassicaceae family that traditionally grows above 10,000 feet. Even Spanish explorers and settlers to the new world recognized that maca may have had properties that enhance fertility in animals and humans.
Alkaloids isolated from the maca root act upon the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, supporting and boosting energy levels and encouraging the production of sex hormones. The hypothalamus is a small gland located in a region within the brain that controls many bodily functions, including eating and drinking, blood pressure and heart rate, and emotional states. In combination with the pituitary gland, hormones secreted by these glands also play a significant role in sexual function.
In a double-blind placebo controlled clinical study of maca extract, men showed improved sexual desire after 8 weeks of use, independent of serum testosterone and estradiol levels. In another study, controlled research showed maca was associated with significant support for erectile function.
Yohimbe (or yohimbine) is derived from the bark of an African tree, Pausinystalia yohimbe. It has been used for over 70 years to support male sexual health and is known to support microvascular health in men. Further scientific research has demonstrated that yohimbine is associated with support of male sexual function.
Rhodiola rosea (also known as “golden root” or “arctic root”) is found throughout high altitudes in the arctic and in mountain areas of Europe and Asia. Use of rhodiola dates back to ancient times in Greece (77 AD). The “rosea” in the plant's name refers to the scent of its freshly cut rootstock.
Rhodiola has been traditionally used in Scandinavia and Russia for centuries to increase physical endurance, work productivity, longevity resistance to high altitude sickness, and for a variety of other uses. To this day, a bouquet of rhodiola roots is still given to couples prior to marriage as a folk custom to ensure fertility and the birth of healthy children.
Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) is an adaptogen, helping the endocrine system adapt to environmental stresses. High stress is not associated with optimal sexual health. In a clinical trial, rhodiola improved energy levels in 64% of participants.
Rhodiola has also been clinically researched for support of male sexual health. In an open study, 26 of 35 men noted substantial improved support of sexual function, after three months of daily use.
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sagittatum) has been found to have natural compounds that have androgenic/anti-estrogenic properties. Secreted by the adrenals and/or testes, (depending on the sex) androgens promote physical vigor and increased libido in men and women.
Panax Ginseng has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine—over 2000 years. Most of the effects of ginseng are attributed to ginsenosides, compounds found in most ginseng species. Ginseng has shown adaptogenic properties, increasing oxygen uptake after use of a standardized extract. The ability of ginseng to exhibit ergocentric properties is possibly due to the increased adrenal responsiveness which ultimately enhances the activity of the pituitary-adrenal axis.
Ginseng appears to be linked to enhanced nitric oxide synthesis, which could contribute to associated vasodilatation and improved blood microvascular flow in men. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 60% of male patients using panax ginseng reported support for sexual function over the placebo group.
Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a tall, slender shrub-like tree native to the hilly jungle slopes of Malaysia. Like many herbals, it has a history of use that has recently caught the attention of Western science and modern researchers.24 Tongkat Ali appears to support healthy male sexual drive possibly through adaptogenic properties, like those found in ginseng.
